The legends featured are the Laidley Worm of Bamburgh in Northumberland, the famous Lambton Worm of Wearside, best-remembered in a Newcastle music hall song and the Sockburn Worm of the Tees Valley with its links to Durham Cathedral and Lewis Carroll. ‘Worms’ in the form of wyverns and serpents were a significant part of Anglo-Saxon and Viking mythology and the mysterious worm legends of the North East have very ancient roots.
